History and AchievementsThe Polanie Dancers of the John Paul II Polish School in Lemont, IL is a children's dance group perpetuating the Folk Dance Culture of Poland. It evolved from a children's Polish dance group organized in 1982, a Polish Mountaineer group "Górale" and a singing and drama group. It was reinvented in 2000 and became known as the POLANIE DANCERS of JPII Polish School after a competition was held to name the group and the name "POLANIE" from the Slavic word pole [POH-leh], meaning "field" won. The children - ages 4-17 years of age - learned dances of several regions of Poland, putting on skits from Polish legends, and incorporating several modern dance numbers in their program as well. The group participated in three International Festivals of Children's Polish Folk Ensembles in Iwonicz Zdroj, Poland (2003, 2006, and 2009). In July of 2009, the POLANIE DANCERS again graced the stages of the International Festival of Children's Dance Ensembles in Iwonicz Zdroj, Krosno and Cieszanow, Poland performing dance suites from Lowicz, Beskid and Old Warsaw, as well as a Hawaiian number for the Concert of Dances from the Country of Residence. The POLANIE DANCERS of the John Paul II Polish School, Inc. are subsidized by the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America and was awarded a grant from the Illinois Arts Council for 2009-2010. 2010 marks POLANIE's Tenth Anniversary.
